What is Fasting?
Fasting is a beautiful spiritual discipline where we intentionally set aside something we depend on (typically food) for a period of time to draw closer to God. It's not about earning His favor or "earning" a miracle—we already have His love and grace through Jesus. Instead, fasting is about creating space.
When we fast, we acknowledge that God is our ultimate source of strength. The physical hunger we feel becomes a "prayer prompt," reminding us to say: “God, I need You more than I need this meal.”
What Fasting is Not
It is important to remember that fasting is not:
-
A Diet: Fasting isn’t about losing weight or fitness; it’s about spiritual focus. If there is no prayer, it’s just a diet.
-
A Performance: Jesus warned against looking miserable or "showing off" your fast. This is a private moment between you and your Father.
-
A Way to Twist God’s Arm: We don't fast to change God’s mind; we fast to let God change our hearts.
Quick Tips for Beginners
-
Start Small: If 21 days feels like a lot, try fasting just one day a week, or one meal a day.
-
Hydrate: Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
-
Replace, Don't Just Remove: When you skip a meal, don't just work through it. Use that time to say a prayer, read a verse, or simply sit in His presence.
-
Give Yourself Grace: If you slip up and eat something, don't let shame stop your journey. Just say a prayer and start again at the next meal!
What if I Can't Fast
From Food?
You can still participate fully through abstaining or fasting from something else. This means giving up distractions like social media, television, or specific hobbies. The principle remains the same: you are giving up a "natural" comfort to focus on a "supernatural" connection. The heart behind it matters most—are you creating space to seek God?

Choose Your Path
There is no "one size fits all" approach to these 21 days. The goal is to choose a path that challenges you but allows you to remain focused on Jesus. Pray and ask the Holy Spirit which of these four pathways you should take.
This is a great option if you want to participate for the full 21 days but aren't ready for a complete fast. "Daniel's Fast"
-
What it is: Removing specific "rich" foods from your diet—typically meat, sweets, and bread.
-
What you eat: Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and water.
-
The Focus: It’s a constant, daily reminder of your commitment as you make intentional choices at every meal.
-
This could also be ideal for those new to fasting.
-
What it is: Fasting from food for a specific portion of the day.
-
Common Rhythms: Fasting from sunrise to sunset, or skipping breakfast and/or lunch (6:00 AM to 3:00 PM).
-
The Focus: Using your lunch hour or meal times specifically for prayer and reading the 21-day guide.
-
If health concerns or your current season of life make food fasting unwise, this may be right for you.
-
What it is: Removing "soul clutter"—things that take up your mental and emotional space.
-
Common Examples: Social media, television, news, cell phone or video games.
-
The Focus: Replacing "scrolling" with "seeking." Every time you reach for your phone to check an app, let that be your cue to talk to God instead.
-
This is a more intense sacrifice and should be approached with prayer and wisdom.
-
What it is: Abstaining from all solid food, consuming only water and light juices.
-
Common Rhythms: Some choose to do this for 24 hours once a week, or for a block of 3 consecutive days during the journey.
-
The Focus: Total physical dependence on God. Note: Please consult a doctor before attempting a complete fast.
-
Fasting is not about what you give up; it is about what you take up to him in prayer. If you give up lunch but don't take up prayer, you're just hungry. Whatever path you choose, ensure it creates space for you to encounter Jesus.
