More on Prayer
Prayer can sometimes feel intimidating. Where do we start? What do we say? Even Jesus' disciples, who spent every day with Him, asked, "Lord, teach us to pray" (Luke 11:1). In response, Jesus gave them a model of prayer that we now call The Lord's Prayer.
This prayer is more than a beautiful set of words to memorize—it's an outline that guides us into deeper connection with God. It teaches us how to align our hearts with His, how to live in daily dependence on Him, and how to trust Him with everything. Want to grow in prayer and fasting over the next 21 days? Below, we'll walk through The Lord's Prayer, unpacking how each part can shape the way you pray.
Matthew 6:9-13 (NIV)
"Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one."
"Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,"
Prayer begins with worship. Recognize God as your Father, the One who knows you, loves you, and calls you His child. Take a moment to praise Him for who He is—holy, powerful, loving, and good. Notice that Jesus teaches us to start not with requests, but with adoration.
Practical Application for Prayer:
-
Begin by thanking God for specific blessings in your life.
-
Reflect on Psalm 103:1: "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name."
Prayer Prompt:
"Father, I worship You because You are holy. Thank You for being my loving Father and for calling me Your child."
-
"Your Kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven"
After worship, surrender. Consecration means setting apart your life for God's purposes. Pray for His will to be done in your life, your family, and your community. This is a time to trust Him with your plans, decisions, and priorities, just as Jesus surrendered in the Garden of Gethsemane.
Practical Application for Prayer:
-
Reflect on areas of your life—work, family, health—where you need to trust God's will.
-
Surrender your plans to God, asking Him to use you for His Kingdom.
Prayer Prompt:
"Lord, I surrender my life to You today. Let Your Kingdom come and Your will be done in my heart, my family, and my community."
-
"Give us today our daily bread"
God invites us to bring our needs to Him—not in a spirit of entitlement, but in humble dependence. Daily bread represents more than food; it includes everything we need to sustain us spiritually, emotionally, and physically—for today.
Practical Application for Prayer:
-
Make a list of your needs for today and bring them to God in prayer.
-
Trust Him to provide, one day at a time.
Prayer Prompt:
"Father, I trust You to provide for my needs today. Thank You for being my provider and sustainer."
-
"Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors"
Confession is an essential part of prayer. It restores our relationship with God and helps us reflect His grace to others. As you confess your sins, ask God to soften your heart toward those who have wronged you, forgiving them as He has forgiven you.
Practical Application for Prayer:
-
Spend time asking God to reveal areas of sin in your life.
-
Pray for anyone you need to forgive, asking God to help you extend grace.
Prayer Prompt:
"Lord, forgive me for the ways I've fallen short, and help me to forgive others as You have forgiven me."
-
"Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil"
Life is full of spiritual battles, and we need God's strength to stand firm. Pray for protection against temptation and for deliverance from the enemy's schemes. Remember, God is your defender, and He has already won the victory.
Practical Application for Prayer:
-
Pray specifically for areas where you feel tempted or weak.
-
Ask God to protect your family, church, and community.
Prayer Prompt:
"Father, protect me from temptation today and deliver me from anything that draws me away from You. Cover my family and community with Your protection."
