Lead Pastor / Elder
Darren Walter is in his eighth year as Lead Pastor at Current and has been in full-time ministry for 20 years. Darren graduated with an undergraduate degree in Bible and Ministry with an emphasis in Preaching from Kentucky Christian University where he met his wife Amanda. They have two great kids. Darren loves to travel with his family (Disney World is one of their favorite vacation spots). Darren is a writer and is a student of creativity, change and leadership.
Executive and Teaching Pastor / Elder
Nathan has been on staff and a member of the preaching team here at Current since January of 2012 and has served as an Elder since July of 2011. He moved into the role as Executive Pastor in March of 2014 where he provides ministry oversight, financial planning and helps oversee the physical operation of the church. He also has the great pleasure of being responsible for the outreach and new member ministries of Current. In his spare time, he has been a practicing attorney since May of 1995, and has regularly been listed by various publications as one of the top attorneys in Houston and the State of Texas. Nathan has a Bachelor of Science Degree from Stephen F. Austin State University. (Go Lumberjacks!) He also has a Doctorate of Jurisprudence from South Texas College of Law and has a number of hours toward a Masters Degree in Divinity from Cincinnati Christian University. Nathan has been married to his wonderful wife Lyl since 1989 and they have been blessed with four children: Ashley, Kameron, Doug and Taylor. He loves to root for his Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers (sorry Houston fans), and likes to hunt and fish when he has the time (in other words... never).
Lead Student Minister
Chris joined the staff in September of 2014. He has a degree in Youth and Family Ministry from Lincoln Christian University and has worked in Student Ministries in Chicago and St. Louis. Chris works to help both Junior High and High School students move toward, forward, and outward in their relationship with Jesus. Chris is married to his lovely wife Natalie. When he isn't working with students Chris loves to play sports, watch movies, drink coffee, and fish.
Lead Children's Minister
Karla is a recent addition to the Current staff as of February 2015. She got her degree in Communications from Greenville College in Illinois, but has spent the last 16 years serving in full time ministry in Louisville, Kentucky. Her passion is Children’s Ministry and she believes that there is no greater calling in life than to lay a strong foundation of faith in the hearts of kids. She’s a hugger, so be prepared if you see her in the hallways at church. Besides hugging, she also really loves Diet Coke, musical theater, her friends and family, and the St. Louis Cardinals. Not necessarily in that order.
James has been in student and children’s ministry for almost 18 years, serving both part-time and full time at churches in Texas and Arkansas. He earned is undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University-Commerce in Counseling. He is currently finishing up his Master’s in Biblical Studies from Dallas Theological Seminary. He is passionate about coming alongside families as they disciple their children into grace-filled followers of Jesus. James and his wife Emily have four spunky daughters. He enjoys spending time with his family whether it be in the outdoors camping or indoors watching a good movie. He is also a long-time St. Louis Cardinals fan!
Worship & Creative Arts Minister
Matt joined the staff in November 2016. Hailing from the great state of Alabama, he holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Guitar Performance and Music & Worship from Samford University. He has had the privilege of leading worship since he was in middle school and has worked with Paul Baloche, Vertical Church Band, All Sons & Daughters, Jason Ingram, Kristian Stanfill, Charlie Hall, and Lincoln Brewster. Besides music itself, Matt’s passionate about teaching what Biblical worship truly is about and educating others in worship theology. He is an avid disc golfer, Auburn University sports fanatic, Mountain Dew enthusiast, and concert attendee.
Worship & Creative Arts Minister
Jeremiah joined the Current team in the beginning of 2017. Jeremiah has prior served in churches in Michigan, North Carolina and Illinois. He has a Bachelor of Science in Communications (Broadcasting) and Marketing from Pensacola Christian College in Pensacola, FL. He has been known to make some pretty stellar videos and graphics as well as leading worship. Jeremiah can often be found behind a camera, computer or instrument much of the time. Outside of Current, Jeremiah loves hanging out with with his awesome wife Kimberly, adorable daughter Mackenzie and incredible son Kaleb (#theklubber). Jeremiah is also passionate about food, mt. dew, and all the sports.
Lead Worship & Creative Arts Minister
Evan has been with Current since the summer of 2009. A transplant to Texas, he has a Bachelor of Arts in Worship Ministry from Lincoln Christian University in Lincoln, IL, and Current is his first full time ministry. He has been active in worship leadership in churches since high school. Evan can often be found sitting in front of his Macbook in various locations around Current with a cup of coffee. When not at Current, Evan spends time with his amazing wife Carrie and two girls Lilliana & Halle. Whilst being surrounded by the women of his family, he enjoys all things sports and wears a Cubbies hat nearly everyday.
Greg joined our staff in June 2017, and has been in full time ministry for over 20 years in a wide variety of pastoral roles. He has an undergrad degree in Bible and Religion, two Masters Degrees from Cincinnati Christian University, and has been an adjunct professor for Lincoln Christian University. He is grateful to use that variety of experiences to serve Jesus at Current. His greatest passion is to help as many people as possible take their next step toward Jesus, wherever they may be on their journey. He has a wonderful wife, Kim, and three children, who are elementary and Jr. high aged. Greg enjoys working out, football (LSU, Colts, fantasy), the beach, hiking, games, and family time. He used to play golf until one day he shot a 132.
Junior High Minister
Danny joined the staff on August 2017. He grew up going to church here at Current since the second grade. He studied and received a Student Ministry degree from Ozark Christian College. He then went on to do Junior High Ministry in Kansas City for 3 and a half years. Now back in the promised land that is Texas, Danny has joined the student ministry team as the Junior High Minister. Danny likes the outdoors, is a huge Houston Rockets fan and LOVES Chick-Fil-A. Danny is currently engaged to Angela. They are set to be married in Spring of 2018.
Tina has been on the administrative staff at Current for 5 years with 15 years total experience as a ministry assistant. She graduated from Dallas Christian College with a degree in Ministry & Leadership. She has worked mostly with student ministry & enjoyed mentoring teens. She also does a lot of really exciting data entry... but honestly enjoys helping the church to efficiently communicate with its members and visitors. She loves Jesus and is learning to simply "Be God's" in every area of her life. Tina loves to read, run, learn new things, travel & meet new people! Mostly, she loves spending time with her husband, Doug, and 3 amazing kiddos!
Marcia serves as the Administrative Assistant to the Worship Pastors and staff. She began volunteering in Children's Ministry in 2011 and joined the staff in 2012. Her passion is to serve wherever there's a need and feels blessed to move toward, forward and outward with Current (she was not bribed to use Current's purpose statement, she's just that good). She and her husband, Jeff, have 2 daughters, Caylan and Avery.
Administrative Assistant to the Lead Pastor
Deborah joined the staff, as the Administrative Assistant to the Lead Pastor, in September 2014 after retiring from a 36 year career in education. She is grateful to use the training and experience she received as a school principal to serve her church. She began attending Current in the summer of 2009, and has been serving in Children's Ministry ever since. She has two adult children, Alaina, who lives here in Houston, and Jason, who lives in Austin. No grandchildren in sight…yet! Deb’s hobbies include reading, cake decorating, and anything techie. Her friends call her the “google machine!”
Jenny has been on staff since 2010. She is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma and has also completed coursework at the University of Houston-Victoria in preparation for the Certified Public Accountant exam. She brings 18 years of experience in the accounting field to her role. Jenny enjoys spending time with her daughter, Daphne, and browsing Pinterest where she collects project ideas that she will never have time to complete and recipes that she’ll never make.
Administrative Assistant to the Executive Pastor
Barby has been on staff with Current since 2012. She has a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Houston with a Secondary Teaching Certificate, and is currently enrolled at the Bible Seminary in Katy, completing her Bible certificate. Barby is active in missions, student and women’s ministries, fulfilling her passion for teaching while sharing her deep love for the gospel. She is the mother of three very active daughters and spends much of her free time attending their choir, cheerleading, and theater events. Whenever she has a quiet moment, she has her nose in a good book or Bible study.
Elyse grew up at Current – A Christian Church, has been an active children’s ministry volunteer, and joined the staff in 2015. She graduated from Ozark Christian College and Missouri Southern State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. Elyse is married to Josh, and they have two boys, Avery and Judah, who keep them very busy and laughing. Elyse enjoys spending time with her family, and tries to sneak in some time to read late at night when the boys are sleeping! She needs regular infusions of coffee and God's word to keep up with her busy, happy life!
Assistant Preschool Director
Jessica is new to the staff even though she has grown up at Current since she was 11 years old. She was active in youth worship, taught at the preschool for several years, and is a children’s ministry volunteer. She graduated from Sam Houston State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Print Journalism. Jessica is married to Daniel, and they have been blessed with two red headed little boys, Kolton and Grayson. She very much enjoys sweet tea, painting antique furniture, photography, and spending time with her family.
Grounds & Facilities Manager
Drew just joined the Current staff in the spring of 2014. He is a self-prescribed DIY'er. He has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Northern Colorado and an Associates of Arts from Colorado Institute of Art. He is an energetic, loving and peaceful person who likes to help people and answer daily challenges. Drew's free time is spent with his wife Laura and two kids West and Josephine. He also enjoys playing and watching sports.
Missions & Hospitality Administrator
Cyndi joined the staff in January 2016. She enjoys using her gift of hospitality to oversee the Current Café, First Impressions and food-related events of the church. In addition, she loves organizing short term mission trips for our church family and staying closely involved with the missionaries Current supports. Cyndi is married to the associate pastor, John, and they have 3 grown children and 2 grandchildren. She loves cooking, decorating, reading, watching movies and spending time with friends.
First Impressions Coordinator
Becky joined the staff in 2017 serving in a new position - Moving Toward Coordinator. She recently retired after 35 years in Nursing. (She is still a nurse, she just doesn’t get paid for her knowledge now!) Becky has been a member of Current since 1997, when the church was Grace Christian Church. She has served in a variety of ministries over the years - Women’s, Children’s/Youth, Worship, Marriage Mentoring, and Prayer, to name a few. She recently started a GriefShare class at Current. Becky has 2 married daughters and 2 active grandsons, who are her favorite people to hang out with. When she is not with them, she enjoys yoga, walking, reading, and playing with her little dog, Meeka.
Ed has attended church at Current since 1997. He has served in numerous leadership positions and has served in an elder capacity on and off for nearly 10 years. He is currently serving as the chairman of the elders. He is married to Kris Winegar and has two sons Jake and Ben. He has a degree in Finance and makes his living as a financial advisor at Merrill Lynch. His hobbies include building things and restoring old cars. He also really enjoys music.
Randy has been attending church at Current since 2010. He currently serves in a leadership capacity in the New Beginnings (Baptism) Ministry and Men’s Ministry. He’s a volunteer in Marriage Ministry, Life Group, Prayer Ministry, Children’s Ministry and where ever else God calls him to serve. He is married to Monica Davis and has two precious daughters, Ava and Laney. Some of his greatest joys include speeding time with the family, investing in friendships and growing closer to Jesus.
Randy and his family have been attending Current since 2011. He and his amazing wife Christine were high school sweethearts in Cleveland, Ohio, but have been happy to call Katy, Texas home for over 35 years. They have five children and six grandchildren, scattered about the country. After 35 years as a petroleum geologist, Randy was blessed to be able to retire in late 2015, but has not really had a chance to let the dust settle on this new chapter in his life. This is Randy’s first term as an elder at Current and he looks forward to serving in this new capacity. He has been busy serving the Lord as a Life Group Leader, Prayer Partner, Greeter, Marriage Mentor, co-leader of Mentoring Ministry, Bible Study teacher & facilitator, JTB volunteer and Grace Care Center service leader. In his “spare” time Randy enjoys coaching Special Olympics sports, assisting his son Nolan with his Sweet Heat business and gardening, showing off his collection of rocks & fossils, and spending time with his grandchildren. He is also somewhat of a coffee geek, experimenting with different brew methods and coffee beans from around the world.
